Recently there is a type of hearing aid, BAHA, which works by direct bone conduction, connecting to the inner ear with a sound processor on the skull. It is suitable for those without an outer ear and those with complete hearing loss, aka Single-sided Deafness (SSD), who are not candidates for conventional hearing aids. BAHA is the hearing aid that allows people to try before they buy by using a soft band as a connection to the skull, without any surgery required. As there is soft tissue in the trial, sound will be clearer when BAHA is implanted. The surgery is a single-stage surgery, done with a minimal invasive implantation, maximizing the preservations of tissues. It takes around 15 minutes to complete the whole procedure and can be done within clinical setting. Hearing aids allow sounds to be heard again, though the sounds are not as rich as the others, it is already much better than hearing nothing.
