Hearing Loss Causes

What type of tumor causes hearing loss?

Healthy male 40 years old, without history of hearing loss or your own family, suddenly began to lose hearing in one ear. Hearing in that ear sounds like everything underwater. Doctor is testing to see if a tumor. What type of tumor that is being sought – in the brain, in your ear? Is this common?

A review of the usual suspects: A tumor in the nasopharynx, known as nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) often causes blockage of the eustachian tube and accumulation resulting from fluid in the middle ear. This condition is more common in Asia (especially Hong Kong), but can affect any race. There are other factors risk of this disease. It can be treated with chemotherapy and radiation, and survival depends on the stage of the disease. The tumors are detected by CT scan or MRI. Another "tumor" that can cause conductive hearing loss is called a cholesteatoma. This is not really a tumor, but a collection dead skin, oil and debris in the middle ear space (the space between the eardrum and the hearing organ). This buildup will continue to collect debris and can erode the ear bones and even the skull, causing hearing loss and, ultimately, cerebral complications. The treatment for this condition only surgical. These tumors are detected by CT scan and sometimes by the clinical examination. Another type of tumor is an acoustic neuroma or vestibular. Both nerves (vestibular and acoustic) sit together, so that this nerve is really technical. These benign tumors called (because they do not metastasize to other parts the body) may be of very slow growth (only them) or they can grow rapidly, causing pressure on the brain and ultimately death. There are three treatment options for these: obeserve (Do Nothing), surgery or radio-surgery (also called gamma-knife). These tumors are detected with MRI. The fourth type is a general category tumors of other … any other cancer of the head and neck can spread to the middle ear or inner ear. For instance, melanoma on the scalp, squamous cell carcinoma of the ear, etc. Someone else mentioned this … endolymphatic sac are extremely rare, and head and neck surgeon at an academic center of this kind could see a case in 40 years of practice (or none). Brain tumors can cause hearing loss, but not usually in one ear. Technically, acoustic neuromas or vestibular, brain tumors are not as they are in the nerves, not the brain. Hope this helps, best of luck. Most of the loss hearing is not a tumor but an adult over 30, we must discard the cause tumors, because no one could have devastating consequences for the patient.
