Hearing loss comes in many forms and comes from a variety of causes. Some of it avoidable-some of it not. Noise induced hearing loss is the largest group of hearing impairment and it is unique in the fact that it is entirely avoidable. Unfortunately once exposed to very loud noises, the damage is done. The good news is that Noise Induced Hearing Loss is preventable by avoiding noises loud enough to do the damage. What is too loud? Anything that causes you discomfort, or if it is loud enough to prevent normal conversation, makes you have to shout to be heard, or causes a ringing sensation in your ears.
The most common type of hearing loss among children is called sensorineural which occurs due to damage of the inner ear. The damage can be caused by an infection, injury or most commonly, through exposure to loud noise. This type of damage cannot be repaired.
Parents of children with hearing loss report outstanding results from the use of hearing aids. Some parents claim that prior to getting the child hearing aid, the child was rather unresponsive and often crabby. When they begin using the hearing aid, the child behaved differently. Most children become more confident in their abilities and become more social.
Mild – Patients with Mild hearing loss have difficulty hearing sound between 20-39 decibels. This condition often leads to difficulty hearing a television & radio at normal levels as well as conducting conversations over distances. Ambient noise can also increase the effects of this hearing loss.
All child hearing aids are chosen for, and fitted to, an individual child’s hearing loss. This is because not all hearing loss is the same. Some children may not be able to hear certain pitches or tones of sound, while other children may not be able to hear others. An Audiologist is a professional trained in hearing loss, they will employ tests to ascertain how much to amplify sound for each child.
There are numerous different types of hearing loss, some of these are hereditary. If there is a history of hearing loss in your family then your children are exposed to a greater risk of developing hearing loss conditions such as sensorineural hearing loss.
Hearing loss due to other disorders is prevalent. The thing with hearing loss is that it can cause other problems too. But that would highly depend on when you acquire your hearing loss, and the severity of your hearing loss. For instance, you can develop speech problems when you have hearing loss.
Hearing disorders make it hard, but not impossible, to hear. Medical treatment, various forms of amplification systems and simple coping skills can improve your hearing and quality of life.
